During a workout session I like to make sure that everything is available. Quick carbs, glucose-meter and insulin.
When I had just been diagnosed with T1D, I was at the gym with my dad. My levels went real low, and I didn't know what happened to me. It was my first hypoglycemia and let´s just say that it took me by surprise.
I told my dad that I was dizzy and nauseous. He asked me if I was low, but I didn't know. I had never been low before. My meter was in my locker and I was in no shape to go and get it so we went to the reseption to get a banana. Luckily we were right in believing I was low and not high. Even though I felt better, we decided to go home. That was a good decision, because getting a hypo really does something to your body. That incident sort of freaked me out. It took me a while to get in balance while working out, and as everyone else I still mess up.
The experience taught me something though. That is to always keep my meter close and to bring food in case I go low. I usually make sure to eat before I work out as well, and if I´m wearing a pump I tend to take it off while in session.
You should all learn something from my mistake and always keep your meter and some food nearby, even if you're not working out.
With that moral lesson I wish you a good day!
